James Carter embodies the bold, visionary leadership the National Bar Association (NBA) needs to move forward. As a nationally respected attorney, educator, and public servant, Carter brings unmatched experience, integrity, and results to the table.

Currently serving on the NBA Board of Governors as Vice President of Finance—and formerly as Vice President of Regions and Affiliates—Carter has provided leadership in multiple impactful initiatives, which include but are not limited to the Bridge 2 Technologies Wallstreet Nasdaq Program, NBI Affiliates Scholarship and Bar Passage Program, chaired the national Constitution Day Program, MLK Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition, chaired the Diversity in Tech Summit, founded the NBA Heath & Wellness Resource Center and serves as Civil Trial Advocacy Boot Camp Faculty.  His work reflects a career built on service, strategy, and strengthening institutions.

As Managing Partner of The Cochran Firm Trials and Mass Torts, Carter has tried and resolved high-stakes cases nationwide, earning recognition in the elite Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. His leadership extends beyond the courtroom: he was elected in 2006 to serve on the first New Orleans city council seated after Hurricane Katrina. His service on the city council was instrumental in bringing the city back to vitality.  He made history in 2011 as the city's first African American Criminal Justice Commissioner, implementing reforms that helped reduce the city’s murder rate.

Carter’s dedication to education and mentorship runs deep. He teaches at Howard University School of Law, sits on its Board of Visitors, and serves on national and international boards focused on justice and opportunity. One of seven Commissioners on the globally significant Port of New Orleans, Carter advocates for African American business opportunity on the international stage.  His leadership as past chair of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors and commitment to civic reform reflect his belief in building systems that serve people first.
